About

Founded by amalia deloney, a futurist adopted from Guatemala. The Guatemalan Adoptee Futures Lab is the first (and only!) futures lab created by and for adoptees. We use participatory futures methods and practices to collectively explore and design futures that reimagine family + belonging, drawing on the lived experience of Guatemalan adoptees throughout the diaspora.Using a hybrid approach, we blend the creative and exploratory nature of a studio with the experimental and research-oriented approach of a lab. This fusion allows for the generation of innovative ideas and the practical testing of those ideas.

Practice

Our Lab is intended to foster a space for creative expression and ideation as well as a systematic methodology to explore, prototype, and design futures scenarios that expand the current understandings of family, nationality, citizenship and belonging. Our intentional approach creates a dynamic environment where participatory futures methods are applied to deeply engage with and reimagine concepts that shape our collective Guatemalan identity drawing directly from the diverse experiences of the Guatemalan adoptee community.
